WOODSIDE, Calif.-- Last year, Emma Catherine Reichow’s trainer Olivia Brown won the Woodside Circuit Opener Grand Prix aboard Emma’s young stallion, Cubiki. This year, it was junior rider Emma who clinched the win in the Woodside Circuit Opener Grand Prix, celebrating her first ever grand prix win on Saturday evening.

“This was my first grand prix win,” sixteen-year-old Emma said. “It was so surreal to win. I rode Cubiki in my first grand prix this spring and we had a rail down. This time, I just wanted to have a clear round and give my horse a solid ride since he’s younger and still a bit green.”

Danny Foster built a challenging track that caused rails to fall throughout the course for some riders and time played a factor.

“My intent was to build confidence in the young horses and riders while still making it a competitive class,” Danny explained. “I really enjoy designing for the jumper ring at Woodside because it’s such a unique ring and I’m able to use the natural obstacles as part of the course. I wanted to ask riders a variety of questions and test their skill sets. For instance, there were tricky rollbacks, including one rollback to a skinny jump, and places where riders could gallop and leave a stride out. I was delighted with the number of riders who went clear.”

Six horse and rider combinations returned for the jump off, and Emma led off aboard her Cubiki. She challenged the rest of the field by posting a fast, clear round with a time of 41.085 seconds. Emma’s trainer, Olivia gave her student a run for the money aboard Valiant, but despite a valiant effort, they dropped two rails and stopped the clock two tenths of a second slower than Emma’s time.

“Being a rider, of course I want to win myself, but it’s equally exciting to see our students do well,” Olivia explained. “All of our students put in so much hard work and effort, and it’s rewarding to see that pay off. I’m especially proud of Emma because we’ve been training her ever since she was on a lesson pony.”
