Welcome to this month’s LEGIS E-News. While we like talking about ourselves, we love bragging about you even more, so drop us a line when you have an achievement you’d like to share!

Team Tidbits

LEGIS team members continue to tear it up in the show ring. Amanda and Picardo had a very successful Memorial Day Classic (May 21-24), followed by the Woodside Summer Circuit where the pair completed their first grand prix, and  then won the Bayfest Low Junior/Amateur Owner Jumper Classic.

The LEGIS Team visited Woodside, cheered for Amanda in the grand prix, judged the Annual Stick Horse Class, and visited clients and exhibitors. It was great fun!

In other news, Courtney took her puppy to a dog friendly beach and he got to play in the tide for the first time. So fun! Sarah survived the storms in Norman, Oklahoma, where she worked as the Technical Delegate for the Feather Creek Horse Trials. Sarah also announced to the LEGIS Team that she and her husband, Craig are expecting a baby boy in December. Congratulations!

Claire celebrated her birthday on the 15th of May and Evan on the 31st, so a belated happy birthday to them!

LEG Trainer Incentive

LEG has offered Trainer Incentives at their shows for over ten years. With the introduction of the LEGIS League, LEGIS began sponsoring a trainer incentive to the High Point Trainer at the LEGIS League Finals. Jeni Brown of Shadowbrook Stables was thrilled when she found out she won a getaway trip. Her student Rachel Cassar won the LEGIS League Cornerstone Medal Final, plus her riders won several other ribbons in the finals as well. “It was a nice surprise and a great way to finish the year,” Jeni says. “I’m definitely encouraging my clients to qualify and go to the finals again this year.”

Jeni took her husband, Mike Keener, with her to the Newport Beach resort. “It’s a Marriott resort and super nice,” she recalls. “They had cute two bedroom condos with really nice amenities and a little balcony where we could look out on the ocean. It was really pretty. The resort had three big swimming pools and it was walking distance to the beach. There was a movie theater there and a nice restaurant. You could play tennis, basketball, go to the gym—just about anything you wanted to do. There are a bunch of cute little beach towns with really good restaurants nearby. We also visited Balboa Island, which is really cute and has all kinds of stuff to do.”

Jeni is very thankful to have received this trip. “It’s just such a nice gift that LEGIS does,” she remarks. “To be able to get away for a couple days is just a great thing. We left on Saturday after lessons and stayed through Monday afternoon. We would never do something like that on our own, so to be given something like that, and it doesn’t cost us anything, is huge. It forces us to get away and take some time off. The financial value is wonderful, but there’s also so much peace of mind to be able to take some time off. All my customers were super excited for us.”

Congratulations to Jeni, and we look forward to hearing from more of our lucky trainers whose hard-working students earned them trips!

LEGIS Rider Bonuses

The LEGIS Rider Bonuses mean an extra bonus check at the end of the year for riders who win two or more qualifying classes at select shows. In Los Angeles, Jamie Sailor threw her hat in the ring for the LAEC series Hunter Rider Bonus when she won the $5,000 Memorial Day USHJA National Hunter Derby on Cloppenberg (Jet Pets Equine, owner). Michael Leon is also gunning for a bonus on C Coast Z or Carrera.

In Northern California, Hugh Mutch has a chance on either Cold Smoke or Bunistar, plus Ilana Halpern and Kelly Van Vleck have joined the fun. They each have two more chances to get a bonus check: Golden Gate Classic (July 1-5) and the Nor Cal Medal Finals Horse Show (Oct 7-11). Updated standings can be found on the LEG website.

Finally, Collman Equestrian Productions offers the $1,500 LEGIS Hunter Rider Bonus, and there are two more shows in the season for riders to try to win a check.

Insurance Buzz: Serving on a Board of Directors

Being involved in your sport can sometimes mean that you serve on a board of directors. This is a great opportunity learn more about the sport you are involved in and to help make a difference. However, you also need to make sure you are protected. Does the group you are serving maintain an appropriate liability policy for clubs and associations? If not, then if a claim is made against the association, the organization will have to hire an attorney using its own funds. This scenario can quickly cause an organization to go out of business, but liability insurance will provide legal defense in most instances.

Additionally, make sure the club or association maintains Directors and Officers Coverage in addition to liability. If a disgruntled person makes a legal claim against the organization, each of the directors is likely to be specifically named. Without D&O coverage, each individual director could be responsible for providing his own legal defense. Additionally, the personal assets of each director or officer may be at risk in a lawsuit.

We don’t want to scare you away from volunteer service, but we want you to be aware of the insurance needed to provide proper protection for the association and its directors. LEGIS has the expertise to help clubs, associations, and their boards obtain suitable insurance for their activities.
